EURO 2012 - Impressions - Wrażenia

It was more or less a year and a half ago that we received a notification by email from UEFA that we were successful in the ticket lottery and could therefore purchase four tickets to the opening game and ceremony of EURO 2012 in Warsaw. There was no end to our joy, excitement and of course preparations. After the tickets to the stadium, the airline tickets had to be purchased for a connection from Orlando in Florida to Warsaw. We flew from Orlando on Air Canada to Toronto and from there on the Polish Airline – LOT – to Warsaw. A lady at the Air Canada counter in Orlando first asked us where we were going, after hearing that it was Warsaw, she intelligently inquired: "Where in Canada is Warsaw?" I shall leave this little gem without a comment.

Mniej więcej półtora roku otrzymaliśmy mailowe zawiadomienie od UEFA, że udało nam się wygrać w loterii możliwość zakupu czterech biletów na ceremonię i mecz otwarcia EURO 2012 w Warszawie. Radości, ekscytacji i oczywiście przygotowaniom nie było końca. Po biletach na stadion przyszła kolej na zakup biletów lotniczych z Orlando na Florydzie do Warszawy. Z Orlando polecieliśmy linią Air Canada do Toronto, a stamtąd LOTem do Warszawy. Pani przy stanowisku linii kanadyjskiej w Orlando najpierw zapytała nas, dokąd lecimy, a po usłyszeniu, że do Warszawy inteligentnie zapytała: "A gdzie w Kanadzie jest Warszawa?" Pozostawię ten kwiatek bez komentarza.

Warsaw welcomed us with an atmosphere of joyful anticipation, preparations and celebrating of this great sports event. Wherever we looked, in windows, on balconies and on cars people had flags.

Warszawa powitała nas atmosferą radosnego oczekiwania, przygotowań i świętowania z okazji tego wielkiego wydarzenia sportowego. Gdziekolwiek nie spojrzeliśmy, w oknach, na balkonach i na samochodach były flagi.

And should anyone still have any doubts as to what was going to happen, there were – among other – lots of such signs:

Even Warsaw's mermaid, as well as Copernicus and Maria Skłodowska-Curie underwent a transformation for the Euro:

Slowly foreign fans started appearing in Warsaw and before the opening game in the streets and parks we could see groups of Greek fans. We came across a large group of them in the Lazienki Park in their fan attires and with flags.

Powoli w Warszawie zaczęli się pojawiać zagraniczni kibice, a przed meczem otwarcia na ulicach i w parkach widać było grupki greckich kibiców.

Spotkaliśmy sporą taką grupę w Łazienkach Królewskich w strojach kibiców oraz z flagami.

Finally, the long awaited moment of heading to the National Stadium arrived. We drove as close as possible and then marched in a joyful, red and white crowd.

Nareszcie nadeszła długo wyczekiwana chwila wyruszenia na Stadion Narodowy. Podjechaliśmy samochodem tak blisko jak się dało, a potem pomaszerowaliśmy wśród radosnego, biało-czerwonego tłumu.

It started raining, but the joyful march continued:

Close up the stadium makes a monumental impression. Inside as well. It was very easy to find one's zone – in our case it was the green zone – there were lots of polite and helpful stewards everywhere.

Z bliska stadion robi wrażenie monumentalne. W środku również. Bardzo łatwo było znaleźć swoją strefę – w naszym przypadku zieloną – wszędzie było wielu uprzejmych i pomocnych stewardów. 

We were plenty early before the Euro 2012 opening ceremony and game, but there was not a dull moment. The roof of the stadium was closed for both the ceremony and the game. Here is a short video clip from the inside of the stadium:

Byliśmy sporo czasu przed rozpoczęciem ceremonii otwarcia Euro 2012 i meczem, ale nie było ani jednej nudnej chwili. Na czas ceremonii i meczu dach stadionu pozostał zamknięty.

There was always something happening on the field. Youth performed in the colors of Poland and Greece:

We could also see what was going on outside the stadium, like in the fan zone in front of the Palace of Culture.

The opening ceremony was short, but interesting, colorful and wonderfully reflecting the character of this sports celebration. There was also a musical accent, Chopin to be specific:

Sama ceremonia otwarcia była krótka, ale ciekawa, kolorowa i świetnie oddająca charakter tego sportowego święta. Był też akcent muzyczny, a konkretnie chopinowski:

What happened next is beyond description, it is something that you have to experience. The emotions were out of this world and the cheering for our team was probably heard on the circumterrestrial orbit.

Tego, co działo się później nie da się opisać, to trzeba przeżyć. Emocje były nie z tej ziemi a doping, jaki zgotowaliśmy naszemu zespołowi słychać chyba było na orbicie okołoziemskiej.

What was the score everyone – or almost everyone remembers: 1:1. Experiencing this atmosphere at the stadium and cheering was a wonderful, incredible thing.

Wynik, jaki był, pewnie wszyscy – albo prawie wszyscy – pamiętają – 1:1. Doświadczenie tej atmosfery na stadionie i dopingowanie było wspaniałym, niesamowitym przeżyciem. 

There were some Greeks sitting in our row. A nice moment occurred after the game because the fans who were sitting closest to each other shook hands and thanked each other for experiencing those sports emotions together.

W naszym rzędzie też siedziało paru Greków. Po meczu nastąpił miły akcent, bo kibice, którzy siedzieli najbliżej siebie podali sobie ręce i podziękowali za wspólne emocje sportowe. 

After the game it was not too late to shop:

We thought that when almost 60 thousand people, not to mention the VIPs will be leaving at the same time, then it will all take quite a while. Nothing of this sort. There were so many exists all over the place, that there was no crowding, no standing in line and waiting. We were outside within literally a couple of minutes.

Sądziliśmy, że jak prawie 60 tysięcy ludzi, o VIPach nie wspominając będzie wychodziło w tym samym momencie, to sporo czasu to wszystko potrwa. Nic z tych rzeczy. Wszędzie było tyle wyjść, że nie było żadnego ścisku, żadnego stania w tłumie i czekania. Dosłownie w parę minut byliśmy na zewnątrz.

To sum up: the organization was sensational and so were the conditions at the stadium, while the emotions were beyond description.

Podsumowując: organizacja na medal, warunki na stadionie wspaniałe, emocje nie do opisania.

May there be more such sports events in Poland!

Oby więcej było takich imprez sportowych w Polsce!

And the cherry on top was when we were taking off from Warsaw, the pilot flew over the stadium. Thanks to that we could see it from a bird's eye view and take this picture almost above the clouds.

A na deser, gdy wylatywaliśmy z Warszawy pilot przeleciał nad stadionem, dzięki czemu mieliśmy okazję rzucić na niego okiem z lotu ptaka i zrobić to zdjęcie już prawie nad chmurami.

From the travel log: Gems of the World - Spotlight on Warsaw's Old Town during this last Holiday Season. Z notatnika podróżnika – Skarby Świata – rzut oka na Warszawską Starówkę w okresie świątecznym

Warsaw is never the same. We visit this incredible city every year and every year there are changes. Big, clearly noticeable changes for the better. The city resembles a living, growing organism in the state of constant transformation, growth, beautification. Clocks seem to tick faster in Warsaw than in other corners of the world.

Warszawa nigdy nie wygląda tak samo. Odwiedzamy to niesamowite miasto co roku i co roku widzimy zmiany. Wielkie, wyraźnie zauważalne zmiany na lepsze. To miasto przypomina, żywy rozwijający się organizm będący w stanie ciągłej transformacji, rozkwitu, pięknienia. Odnosi się wrażenie, że zegary tykają szybciej w Warszawie niż w innych zakątkach świata.

This last Holiday Season we took a stroll along parts of Warsaw's Old Town.

W ten ostatni okres świąteczny poszliśmy na spacer po części Warszawskiej Starówki.  

The Warsaw Barbican was built in the middle of the XVI century.  Situated along the Warsaw defensive walls on the passage from the Old Town to the New Town. The Barbican was completely destroyed during World War II, but was rebuilt on the basis of drawings from the XII century.

Barbakan został zbudowany w połowie XVI wieku. Znajduje się wzdłuż murów obronnych miasta przy przejściu ze Starego na Nowe Miasto. Barbakan został całkowicie zniszczony w czasie drugiej wojny, ale został odbudowany dzięki rycinom z XII wieku.

Walking along Nowomiejska street, we reached the Old Town Market Square.

Idąc ulicą Nowomiejską dochodzimy na Rynek Starego Miasta.

The Market Square obtained its final appearance in the timeframe from the XIII to the XIV century. This is where the city's life concentrated. Numerous historical events took place here, political manifestations and even executions. It was also used for commercial purposes.

Rynek został ukształtowany w okresie od XIII do XIV wieku. Tutaj koncentrowało się życie miasta. Tutaj miały miejsce liczne wydarzenia historyczne, manifestacje polityczne i publiczne egzekucje. Wykorzystywano go również w celach handlowych.

In this painting by Zygmunt Vogel from 1785 you can see a somewhat different image of the Old Town Market Square. Near the cart is a cage for offenders. Deeper in the picture on the left side, at the exit of the street called Waski Dunaj (Narrow Danube) are the stocks also known as pillory for more serious offenders. A careful observer can spot a figure of an old man at the top of it.

Na tym malowidle Zygmunta Vogla z 1785 roku widzimy nieco odmienny Rynek Staromiejski. W pobliżu wozu jest klatka dla przestępców. Głębiej, po lewej stronie, przy wylocie ulicy Wąski Dunaj znajduje się pręgierz dla nieco groźniejszych rzezimieszków. Uważny obserwator zauważy zwieńczającą go figurę starca. 

Much has changed since those days. This Holiday Season there is a Christmas tree and a festive market with lots of treasures available for purchase.

Wiele się zmieniło od tamtych dni. W ten okres świąteczny na Rynku jest choinka oraz kiermasz z licznymi skarbami.

In this short video you can also see the Mermaid of Warsaw – the symbol of the city. At this time of the year, she is wearing a Santa hat. It was Warsaw's coat of arms as far back as 1390.

W tym krótkim materiale wideo widać Syrenkę – symbol Warszawy. O tej porze roku ma na głowie czapkę Mikołaja. Syrenka znana była jako herb Warszawy już w 1390 roku.

From the Market Square we stroll towards the Royal Castle. On the plaza in front of it is another, bigger Christmas tree. Unfortunately, this picture taken in the evening came out slightly blurred:

Z Rynku Starego Miasta idziemy w kierunku Zamku Królewskiego. Na placu znajduje się jeszcze jedna, większa choinka. Niestety to zdjęcie zrobione wieczorem wyszło rozmazane:

We decided to come back when it was lighter. Above the front entrance to the Castle you see a poster advertising an exhibit on King Stanislaw August Poniatowski, the last king of Poland prior to Partitions.

Zdecydowaliśmy się wrócić kiedy było widniej. Nad wejściem do Zamku widać plakat reklamujący wystawę poświęconą Stanisławowi Augustowi Poniatowskiego ostatniemu królowi Polski przed rozbiorami.

Here is a more complete view of the Royal Castle Plaza with the Column of King Sigismund III Vaza. Originally from 1644, destroyed during World War II, the Column returned with much celebration on July 22, 1949.

Tu się roztacza pełniejszy widok na Plac Zamkowy i Kolumnę Zygmunta III Wazy. Pochodzi ona z roku 1644. Zniszczona podczas drugiej wojny, wróciła uroczyście w dniu 22 lipca, 1949 roku.

This picture shows a relatively new element in Warsaw's landscape. When you're facing the Royal Castle, to the right you can see the outline of the new National Stadium where – among others – the opening ceremony and game for EURO 2012 will take place.

To zdjęcie pokazuje stosunkowo nowy element krajobrazu Warszawy. Gdy stoimy zwróceni w kierunku Zamku, to po prawej stronie widać zarys Stadionu Narodowego, gdzie – między innymi – odbędzie się ceremonia i mecz otwarcia EURO 2012.

On September 2, 1980 Warsaw's Old Town was place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It was entry number 30.

W dniu 2 września 1980 roku Warszawska Starówka została wpisana na Listę Światowego Dziedzictwa. Był to wpis numer 30.

Warsaw's Old Town is so much more than what the limited space on the blog permits to show. It is the site of the St. John the Baptist Cathedral, among other great sites worth visiting.

Warszawska Starówka, to o wiele więcej niż można pokazać na blogu. Znajduje tu się również Katedra Świętego Jana Chrzciciela i wiele innych wspaniałych miejsc wartych odwiedzenia.

There are lots of little and bigger streets, historical buildings, restaurants, cafes and little stores with countless treasures.  Every brick, every stone has a story within it. Ages past whisper along every step of the way here, just like in the rest of this incredible city. It is a place with a soul – just like the whole city of Warsaw.  

Jest tu mnóstwo małych i nieco większych ulic, zabytkowych budynków, restauracji, kawiarń oraz niewielkich sklepików z niezliczonymi skarbami. Każda cegła, każdy kamień ma w sobie jakąś historię. Na każdym kroku słychać tutaj szept minionych wieków, tak jak i w innych częściach tego niesamowitego miasta. Jest to miejsce z duszą – tak jak i cała Warszawa.
